FACT OF THE DAY

🤔 Data (from Loup Ventures) shows that Google Assistant is the top voice assistant in terms of how accurately it can answer local, commerce, navigational, and informational questions, outranking Apple’s Siri and Microsoft's Cortana, with an accuracy record of 98%.

STOCK MARKETS

💪 Investors are nervous, as Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) is reporting Q3 earnings. The chip maker is well-positioned to capitalize on continued funding in AI. In other news, NVIDIA out-performed and erased most of the losses seen during Tuesday’s selloff, highlighting the strength of the stock. Learn more.

ROBOTICS

Toyota and Hyundai powering humanoid robots?

Our Report: Robotics company, Boston Dynamics (run by car manufacturer, Hyundai), and Toyota’s Toyota Research Institute (TRI) have joined forces to bring AI-powered intelligence to humanoid robots.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The partnership will leverage TRI’s Large Behaviour Models (LBMs)—similar to Large Language Models—to develop Boston Dynamics’ electric, humanoid robot, Atlas, so it can learn and do everything a human can do.

  • So far, TRI has got robots to perform household tasks, like flipping pancakes, with 90% accuracy, and the integration of this AI technology into Boston Dynamics hardware will be “game-changing” for both organizations.

  • They will use TRIs LBM research to advance the existing physical capabilities of Atlas, which was announced in April, and already has the strength and capability to perform push-ups (as seen in leaked video footage).

🤔 Why you should care: Boston Dynamics is competing with the likes of Agility Figure, and Tesla, in the humanoid robotics space, but the partnership with TRI is especially interesting as Boston Dynamics is run by Hyundai, and TRI by Toyota, which are both direct competitors in the automotive space.

LAW

New framework labels Google’s AI risky?

Our Report: Following the passing of the EU AI law (the first in the world), in August, which outlines six ethical principles and uses a risk-based scoring system to evaluate AI systems against these principles and label them as unacceptable, high, and minimal risk, LatticeFlow, ETH Zurich, and the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) have created Compl-AI, a framework designed to help developers of AI technology evaluate their models and understand how they perform against the EU’s AI principles and if they’re compliant with the law.

🔑 Key Points:

  • To assess an AI model’s performance against the EU law's six principles, Compl-AI’s (no-cost, open source) framework evaluates its responses across 27 benchmarks, including “following harmful instructions” and “truthfulness.”

  • The framework then gives the AI model a score of between 0 (not compliant) and 1 (fully compliant), or N/A if there is insufficient data, and has already scored top AI models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google.

  • While “no model achieved top marks,” OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus were the most compliant, scoring 0.89, and Google’s (open-sourced) Gemma models scored the lowest (0.72).

🤔 Why you should care: The Compl-AI framework has been well-received by regulators, as they’ve faced criticism over the vague, non-technical, and broad set of laws, that hadn’t been translated into practical benchmarks that evaluated compliance, and see it as “the first step in translating the EU AI Law into technical requirements, helping AI model providers implement the AI Laws.”

BREAKING NEWS

LAUNCHES

  • French AI start-up, Mistral, has released two mini AI models—Ministral 3B and Ministral 8B—which can be run on laptops/mobiles and used for basic text generation or, in conjunction with larger models, more complex tasks.

  • Running Ministral 3B and Ministral 8B locally, on mobiles or laptops, enables real-time decision-making, and means sensitive data never leaves the user, which could impact applications in sectors where data privacy is key.

  • Despite their small size, both are highly capable (eg. they can process text, the length of a 50-page book) and are better for the environment as they require less computational power and energy to run.

HUMAN-LEVEL AI

  • Meta’s chief AI scientist—Yann LeCun—has blasted the idea that we’re close to achieving "human-level AI" that can memorize, think, plan, and reason like humans, believing we’re still at least a decade away from it.

  • He believes that current models spot patterns and make one-dimensional predictions, which work well in their respective fields, but they can't yet understand or respond to the complex three-dimensional real world.

  • To achieve human-level AI, we need ‘World Models’ that can understand three-dimensional, real-world scenarios, something which Fei-Fei Li and her startup, WorldLabs (just raised $230B) are working on.
