Our Report: Samsung has just revealed that their newest model—The Galaxy S24—will feature Google Gemini-powered AI features, including AI summarization and auto-translate over calls.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The S24 will directly incorporate Gemini Pro (Google’s latest, and most advanced AI model), to enhance Samsung’s Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard apps with features like improved summarization.

  • Furthermore, Gemini Nano (a more compact and efficient model), introduces Magic Compose in Google Messages, and Google’s Imaghen 2 model will provide advanced photo editing capabilities directly into Samsung’s Gallery.

  • The Galaxy S24 is the second Android device, after Google's Pixel 8 Pro, to use Gemini Nano, although Samsung will be among the first to test Gemini Ultra—the most advanced Gemini model.

  • Another feature mentioned by the Samsung team is an auto-translate feature for calls which uses AI to detect foreign languages and translate them to your desired language.

🤨 Why you should care: This is one of the first signs of true AI integration in smartphones, and we expect this to catalyze a new era of smartphone innovation—an industry that has long been stagnant.

GLOBAL LEGISLATION

  • At the World Economic Forum in Davos, AI was a major topic, with executives exploring its potential. But, despite AI's promise, CEOs are struggling to transition from experimental demos to applications.

  • On that note, ChatGPT has sparked a wave of investment and interest, but its practical enterprise application remains challenging (at least for executives).

  • Amongst hope remain reservations & concerns about false content and regulatory compliance—with many governments and institutions hesitant to fully take on the technology.

  • While some companies see AI as a tool for improving sales or medical note-taking, the overall business impact and revenue generation from AI ventures are still uncertain.

“With this vision in mind, we’re building AI models that have the reasoning capabilities of today’s text-based LLMs, but also the ability to consume and output voice and video data in real time. Unlike today’s LLMs, these models will be able to understand the considerable nuance present in human speech and absent in plain text, which will allow them to respond to the user more quickly and fluently.”

Remote / $25hr / Entry level role

“We are looking for creative people who can quickly draft high-quality, accurate content. Writers, editors/proofreaders, educators, researchers, and people with writing-oriented degrees are highly encouraged to apply.”

FOREIGN INVESTMENT
  • Amazon is expanding its $1B Industrial Innovation Fund, which was launched in 2022, and has already invested in startups enhancing logistics, supply chain, and customer fulfillment—now focusing on AI, autonomous vehicles, and Asian markets.

  • Franziska Bossart (the fund's new head) aims to include more mature companies and extend geographically, including heavily across Asia in developing economies.

  • The fund—although initially slow in investments—is now gaining momentum, seeking technologies that streamline Amazon's delivery processes and contribute to its mission of efficiency and customer service.

LEGISLATION
  • The Superintendent of Financial Services has proposed a circular letter for public comment to regulate the use of AI by financial protection companies in New York to prevent AI from perpetuating or amplifying systemic biases and unfair discrimination.

  • The guidance requires companies to analyze AI and external consumer data for discrimination, ensure actuarial validity, maintain oversight and transparency, and implement risk management.

  • This move aligns with NY’s commitment to ethical AI use and Governor Hochul’s policy on AI, underscoring the state's leadership in responsible technology development.

SMARTPHONES
  • Google has enhanced its Google Lens feature by introducing AI-powered overviews for multisearch, which basically allows users to upload a photo or use their camera, and then ask a question about the subject in the image with AI-generated answers.

  • Unlike previous versions that only showed similar images, the new feature provides specific insights based on information sourced from the internet.

  • Additionally, this capability is integrated with Google's new Circle to Search gestures (imagine literally drawing a circle on your phone), facilitating easier and more intuitive searches.
