Our Report: Despite all the chaos at OpenAI (covered in detail below), we decided it’d be important to provide more context globally to what’s happening in AI—specifically, how the US chip export ban is hurting China’s AI startups, but not so much the giants yet.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Earlier in the year, Biden banned NVIDIA from exporting high-performance graphic processing units to China, which has led Chinese tech giants to hoard these chips in anticipation of a tech war.

  • For example, Baidu has secured enough AI chips for its ChatGPT equivalent, Ernie Bot, for the next year or two, and Tencent supposedly hoarded enough to develop their AI for a couple of generations.

  • The difficulty in acquiring advanced chips is pushing Chinese firms to seek alternatives and could slow AI development in China, but deep-pocketed Chinese companies like Baidu, ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba have made significant investments in chips.

  • Baidu's recent launch of Ernie Bot 4, comparable to GPT-4, highlights the resilience of big tech firms in the face of export restrictions, and the chip shortage/high costs are expected to lead to a consolidation phase in the industry, affecting smaller players more than the giants.

🤨 Why you should care: The US chip export ban is reshaping China's AI industry, creating disparities between well-funded giants and smaller startups—likely leading to a monopolistic market dominated by few with huge barriers to entry.

“How can I build confidence and assertiveness in my professional interactions?”

Optimized

"I am looking for guidance on how to develop greater confidence and assertiveness in various professional settings. Often, I find myself hesitating to express my ideas or opinions in meetings or discussions, regardless of the size or composition of the group. This challenge extends to interactions with both peers and higher-ups. I'm interested in learning about universal strategies or techniques that can help individuals in any professional field to communicate more confidently and assertively. What are some practical steps I can take to overcome self-doubt and become more vocal in expressing my thoughts? Are there specific exercises or daily practices that can gradually build my assertiveness? Additionally, I would appreciate advice on how to strike the right balance between being assertive and maintaining respect and professionalism, to ensure that my demeanor is perceived positively and effectively."

Sam Altman is back in as CEO of OpenAI, and this time around, the board has been almost entirely replaced by some new faces, including Bret Taylor (former CEO of SalesForce) and Larry Summers (former secretary of the treasury).

We’ll be covering the entire story in depth tomorrow, but here’s the saga in short:

  • The board fires Altman without warning

  • Many senior execs follow Altman

  • 95% of the workforce threatens a mass exodus

  • Microsoft’s Satya Nadella hires Altman

  • Altman reinstated as CEO of OpenAI

  • Board fired & replaced

Some very smart individuals have realized that Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Action Button (which can be used to perform various tasks, like opening the Camera or using Accessibility features) can be configured to access ChatGPT Voice, offering an alternative to Siri.

Contextually, it’s been a huge week for AI assistants/chatbots, with announcements including Bard assistant, ChatGPT voice, Claude 2.1 (covered in yesterday’s newsletter), and Inflection-2 (more details below).

Google is set to launch 'Assistant with Bard,' a new AI-enhanced version of its classic Google Assistant, that integrates with YouTube to provide AI summaries, although, unfortunately, it won't retain all the features of the original Assistant.

Users will have to choose between the AI-rich 'Assistant with Bard' and the 'Classic Assistant,' now a separate option, and although an official release date hasn't been announced, Google anticipates its rollout in the coming months.
