Perplexity launch controversial AI election hub

Our Report: Ahead of the US general election on Tuesday, 5th November, AI search start-up, Perplexity, has launched a dedicated Election Information Hub to help answer voter questions and provide “an entry point for understanding key issues” surrounding the upcoming election

🔑 Key Points:

  • The hub delivers AI-generated candidate summaries and answers to voters' questions—like locations of local polling stations—and (from Tuesday) will give live updates on elections, with per-state breakdowns.

  • Perplexity has partnered with The Associated Press to provide the live vote count, and Democracy Works (powering similar features for Google) to deliver voter information, including polling requirements/locations/times.

  • To provide accurate election-related information they’ve curated a “set of the most trustworthy and informative sources” (including Ballotpedia and news organizations) which are “non-partisan” and have been “fact-checked.”

🤔 Why you should care: Despite using reputable, ‘non-partisan’, and ‘fact-checked’ sources, the hub has already faced some issues—it failed to mention that Robert F. Kennedy, who was listed on the ballot, had dropped out, for example—which has raised concerns about its level of accuracy and how damaging delivering misinformation could be, and explains why other AI firms have shied away from building similar platforms: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search directs users to Reuters and the Associated Press, Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Google’s Gemini all refuse to answer election-related questions.

Is it a good or bad idea to use AI to deliver voting information and answer voter questions?

TOGETHER WITH RYSE

Ryse image

It might not be as headline-making as LLMs, but the $158B Smart Home industry is seeing an under-the-radar boom. The market for smart shades alone is growing at an astonishing 23% annually.

One company capitalizing on booming demand is RYSE.

They’ve patented SmartShade technology that’s already sold over 60k units, and they've recently launched in over 120 Best Buy retail stores.

RYSE is on track to mirror the success of industry titans like Ring and Nest, both of which were acquired at massive valuations.

Early investors have seen the value of their shares grow over 20X, with significant upside remaining as the industry continues its projected double digit growth until 2030.

If you missed out on the last round, now's the time. RYSE has just opened a new public offering at just $1.75/share.

ENTERTAINMENT

Disney embraces AI: New team unveiled

Our Report: Disney has formed a new business unit—the Office of Technology Enablement—that will focus on integrating AI and mixed reality across its film, television, and theme park divisions.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The new unit will be led by Jamie Voris—Disney’s CTO, who led the development of Disney’s Apple Vision Pro app—who will report to Entertainment co-chairman, Alan Bergman and will consist of 100 employees.

  • The group's main aim is to ensure that the adoption and use of AI and mixed reality is strategic and responsible and are aligned with Disney’s goals and values across film, TV, and theme parks.

  • It will use the technology to enable teams within Disney to drive creative output with “greater agility, velocity, and consistency,” particularly in post-production and visual effects, and non-customer-facing areas of the parks.

🤔 Why you should care: Disney’s decision to create a new business unit—dedicated to integrating AI and mixed reality tech into its various divisions and offerings—highlights a growing trend within the entertainment industry towards embracing AI, as film studios engage with tech giants like Meta and OpenAI to find new ways to leverage AI to make production processes more efficient and sustainable.
