ETHICS
Our Report: OpenAI has released a framework—”the model spec”—designed to shape how AI tools (like ChatGPT) behave in the future and asked for public feedback on how it proposes it should govern its AI models in certain situations, going forward.
🔑 Key Points:
The model spec outlines objectives to provide broad direction, rules to ensure safety and legality, and defaults to provide stability (but these can be overridden if needed).
The key principles include: AI models should help developers and end-users with helpful responses, benefit humanity, and reflect OpenAI’s and society’s social norms and laws.
It’ll be a living document that’ll be regularly updated, and OpenAI will wait for feedback, from the public and the different stakeholders, before publishing a second draft.
🤔 Why you should care: Although the model spec doesn’t impact its current GPT or DALL-E models, OpenAI is publishing this document and asking for feedback to “provide more transparency on our approach to shaping model behavior and to start a public conversation about how it could be improved”, which could be a response to Musk’s recent lawsuit against them for abandoning its nonprofit mission to ensure that AI benefits humanity.

BIOLOGY
Our Report: Google DeepMind has launched AlphaFold 3—an improved version of AlphaFold 2—that can accurately predict the structure and interactions of “all molecules” which will transform our understanding of the biological world and help with new drug discovery.
🔑 Key Points:
AlphaFold 3 is 50% more accurate and can complete lab-based tasks, accelerating the work of researchers in industries like pharmaceuticals and drug development.
Google worked with domain experts and biosecurity, research, and industry specialists to establish potential risks around AlphaFold 3 to make sure the model was deployed responsibly.
It’s partnered with Isomorphic Labs which is working with pharmaceutical companies to use AlphaFold models to solve real-world drug design challenges and help with drug discovery.
🤔 Why you should care: As well as accelerating the development of new drugs for ill patients, AlphaFold 3 has the potential to unlock more transformative science in other industries, like helping to develop bio-renewable materials for more resilient crops, for example.
SECRET INTELLIGENCE
🤐 Microsoft has built a secret spy bot
Our Report: Microsoft has created a generative AI model for top-secret work within US intelligence agencies.
🔑 Key Points:
Microsoft's new spy model has been designed to help US intelligence agencies process and analyze vast quantities of classified information without compromising secrecy.
It’s built using OpenAI's GPT-4 model, has taken 18 months to develop, and is on a special network that's only accessible by the US government.
Plus, although it’s technically cloud-based, it’s built on a static cloud that’s completely isolated from the internet, leaving it unsusceptible to hacks and data leaks.
🤔 Why you should care: Although the spy bot is live, it hasn’t been approved for top-secret use, so the Pentagon and other government departments aren’t able to use it, just yet.
FUNDING
🏭 Microsoft to spend $3.3B to transform Wisconsin
Our Report: Microsoft is investing $3.3B (over the next 2 years) to build a data center at a Mount Pleasant site, in Wisconsin, to expand cloud computing and AI infrastructure capacity
🔑 Key Points:
The Mount Plesant data center will generate more than 2,300 union construction jobs and provide long-term employment opportunities over the next several years.
Microsoft also plans to create a manufacturing-focused AI co-innovation lab in Wisconsin and implement an upskilling initiative to give over 100,000 Wisconsin residents AI skills.
It’s also building an Academy that will train and certify more than 1,000 students—over the next 5 years—to work in the new data center and other IT jobs in the area.
🤔 Why you should care: The data center will be built on the same plot of land where Trump previously announced a $10B manufacturing deal by Taiwan electronics manufacturer Foxconn–which failed to materialize–bringing new, transformative, and positive change to Wisconsin.
