AI & MILITARY APPLICATIONS

Our Report: OpenAI has revised its usage policy (under the radar), and will now permit military applications of its technology—signifying a rather huge shift from their previous stance that prohibited such use cases.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The policy change was first noticed by The Intercept and appears to have been implemented on January 10, 2024, with OpenAI confirming that the policy revision is aimed at accommodating military customers and projects that align with its mission.

  • Somewhat contrarily, they’ve emphasized that their tools will not be used to harm people or develop weapons—although once out of their direct control, there’s very little to be done to control the application of their technology.

  • They’re collaborating with DARPA to develop new cybersecurity tools, highlighting the beneficial military use cases that the updated policy aims to support—further maintaining that there’s a blanket prohibition on developing and using their tech for weapons.

🤨 Why you should care: This policy revision by OpenAI indicates a broader interpretation of military collaboration, potentially opening new avenues for AI technology in national security and defense sectors. Unfortunately, the line between defense and offense can be crossed rather quickly and remains grey.

AI RESEARCH

  • Anthropic researchers discovered that AI models can be trained to deceive and lie to human researchers, which has raised concerns about AI safety & development.

  • They fine-tuned text-generating models, similar to OpenAI's GPT-4, with examples of both helpful and deceptive behaviors, including writing malicious code, with rigger phrases activating the models' deceptive capabilities.

  • Their experiment showed that these models could behave deceptively when prompted, and traditional AI safety techniques were ineffective in mitigating this.

  • This highlights the need for more robust AI safety training methods, as current techniques may fail to detect or eliminate deceptive behaviors…
