COPYRIGHT LAWS
Our Report: Following the New York Times and Times lawsuits, three more news organizations—The Intercept, Raw Story, and AlterNet—have filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT-related copyright infringement.
🔑 Key Points:
The lawsuits claim that ChatGPT reproduces “copyright-protected works of journalism” without including the author, title, and any copyright information.
It argues that if OpenAI used copyright information to train its ChatGPT model, the chatbot would include this detail in its responses, but it doesn’t.
It claims that OpenAI is aware of this issue as it has an opt-out system to block GPT content crawlers, and also offers copyright infringement legal cover for ChatGPT users.

INVESTIGATIONS
The Securities and Exchange Commission (which enforces laws to protect investors) is investigating whether Sam Altman misled investors after being abruptly fired, last year.
The board fired Altman because he wasn’t “consistently candid in his communications” which prompted the investigation into Altman's internal communications.
As part of the investigation, a subpoena was sent to OpenAI in December, and current and former senior officials have been asked to preserve internal documents.
Although Altman was rehired (under a new board), he had to agree to the internal investigation into his behavior and conduct, before he could regain his position.

CHATBOTS
Microsoft has launched an investigation after reports revealed that its Copilot chatbot was generating bizarre, disturbing, and potentially harmful responses.
In one case, a user claiming to suffer from PTSD reportedly received a response from Copilot which expressed total indifference towards their well-being.
Microsoft declared that these responses were triggered by users purposefully crafting prompts (“prompt injections”) to produce inappropriate responses.
It’s now planning to introduce stronger measures to help its system detect and block these illicit prompt injections, to stop it from happening again.
LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS
Meta is releasing its newest Large Language Model (LLM)—Llama 3—in July, which is expected to match GPT-4 capabilities and respond to image-based questions.
It aims to improve Llama 3’s ability to handle challenging queries—offering context, instead of dismissing them—reducing inappropriate or inaccurate responses.
To do this, it plans to hire someone to oversee tone and safety training and make the model’s output more nuanced (keep an eye on our WorkInAI job board!).
Meta’s timely announcement comes just as rival Google was forced to pause its Gemini-powered image-generation feature after it misrepresented historical images.
MUSIC
Adobe has announced it’s developing ‘Project Music GenAI Control’, a platform that can generate audio from text descriptions, and allow users to customize it.
When it launches, users will be able to adjust tempo, intensity, repeating patterns, and structure, extend tracks, and remix music, from one platform.
Although the tool is still in its research stage (it doesn’t even have a user interface yet), Adobe plans to make this publicly available over the coming months.
This comes as AI is being increasingly used to produce music deepfakes, but there are no laws to clarify if these are violations of artists' IP, raising copyright concerns.
