OpenAI collaborates with Ariana Huffington

Our Report: The OpenAI startup fund and Huffington Post and Thrive Global founder—Ariana Huffington—have joined forces to build an AI-powered ‘health coach’ (called Thrive AI Health) that will provide wider access to expert health coaching and advice, to improve health and reduce chronic disease.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Thrive AI Health will use generative AI to provide personalized advice, recommendations, and ‘nudges’ around users’ sleep, food, fitness, stress management, and connections to improve health.

  • The AI health coach will be trained on science, biometrics, and lab data, user preferences, and OpenAI and Thrive Global resources and it will have robust privacy and security guardrails.

  • Walmart co-founder Helen Walton is one of its key strategic investors, and DeCarlos Love—who previously led fitness and health experiences at Google‘s Fitbit subsidiary—will be CEO.

🤔 Why you should care: This is the latest in a long line of failed health apps, that offered AI-powered personalized health recommendations, with most running into business, technical, and regulatory challenges—including user privacy issues—meaning Thrive AI Health has an uphill battle on its hands and will need to strike a balance between “democratizing” its tech and preserving user privacy.

Data worker truth exposed

Data worker truth exposed

Our Report: Ever wondered who manually handles the reams and reams of data used to train AI models? Or who takes on the task of content moderation or data annotation? A new project (called the Data Workers’ Inquiry) has captured the real-life experiences of data workers worldwide, to expose the secret realities of data work and advocate for better working conditions.

🔑 Key Points:

  • These monotonous, thankless, and psychologically taxing tasks are often outsourced to poorer countries, where workers are happy to work for a fraction of an American or European wage.

  • The Data Workers Inquiry collected anecdotes from workers, as opposed to quantifiable statistics (which can be manipulated into positives), to capture the real truth, directly from the source.

  • Often exposed to violent, graphic, and hateful content, these workers describe their job as “soul-crushing”, and with little support, often suffer from mental health problems and drug dependencies as a result.

🤔 Why you should care: While the Data Workers’ Inquiry hasn’t triggered any official responses or changes from the companies implicated, the findings clearly indicate that further investigation is needed, and there are plans to continue this work in more countries—including Brazil, Finland, China, and India—to try and create a more equitable and respectful tech industry.

🧬 Google reveals brain breakthrough

Our Report: Researchers on the Google Connectomics team have mapped the biggest and most detailed AI-assisted reconstruction of human brain tissue, to date, which captures each brain cell and neural network connection in intricate detail, with plans to reconstruct a whole mouse brain, next.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Working alongside Harvard researchers—over 10 years—Google researchers used microscopy methods and machine-learning models to build a 3D map from a small piece of brain tissue.

  • The fragment of brain tissue was taken from a 45-year-old woman, suffering from epilepsy, and the 3D map revealed un-seen knot-like structures, that researchers think could be connected to the epilepsy.

  • Now, the team is mapping the whole brain of a mouse—which will be 500 times the size of this human brain map—to unravel the mysteries of neural connections, starting with a key region for learning and memory.

🤔 Why you should care: This and Google’s future mouse brain project pushes the boundaries of current technology and brings us closer to getting valuable insights into the human brain, helping us to understand brain function and disease better.

🍳 Reels to recipes in seconds

Our Report: Pestle—a recipe management app that helps users find and save recipes—has a new AI-powered feature that allows users to import recipes directly from Instagram Reels.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Pestle founder—Will Bishop—initially developed the app out of frustration with finding recipes on traditional websites that were cluttered with ads and lengthy narratives, making them difficult to follow.

  • This new feature uses on-device ML to import and process recipes within Instagram Reels, almost instantly, unlike other apps that use external AI services (like ChatGPT) to complete similar tasks.

  • The updated version is available from the iOS App Store, with additional features unlocked for subscribers such as cooking inspiration, 14-day meal planning, and shopping lists with reminders.

🤔 Why you should care: Although building this new feature with a third-party app—like ChatGPT—would have been quicker and easier, Bishop decided to build his own, on-device ML model to ensure faster processing times and greater control over user data privacy.
