SAFETY

OpenAI exposes election manipulators!

Our Report: OpenAI has discovered (and subsequently banned) a group of ChatGPT accounts linked to an Iranian influence group—called Storm-2035—who were using the tool to publish and spread AI-generated articles and social media posts, attempting to influence public opinion about a range of topics, including the US presidential election.

🔑 Key Points:

  • OpenAI uncovered Storm-2035 through the ‘Microsoft Threat Intelligence’ report, which identified that the group has been creating fake news and sharing it—attempting to influence US elections—since 2020.

  • Storm-2035 had 1 Instagram and 12 X (formerly Twitter) accounts and used ChatGPT to draft and publish posts, comments, and long-form articles—including one that said “X was censoring Trump’s tweets”—on these channels.

  • OpenAI confirmed the AI content wasn’t shared widely and didn’t achieve "meaningful audience engagement," which is often the case with operations that use AI to spread disinformation, as they’re quick/inexpensive to spin up.

🤔 Why you should care: This comes after—just three months ago—OpenAI discovered and banned five campaigns that were using ChatGPT to manipulate public opinion, and is reminiscent of when bad actors would use social media platforms to influence elections, but this time they’re able to use AI to generate and spread more malicious information quicker, and, therefore, reach a wider audience.

POLICY

⚖️ US Congress opposes Californian AI Bill

US Congress opposes Californian AI Bill

Our Report: Following reports last week that tech giants (including Google and Meta) in Silicon Valley were against the proposed Californian AI bill—SB 1047—designed to prevent large AI models from causing “critical harm” against humanity, congresswoman—Nancy Pelosi—has now followed suit and issued a statement outlining her opposition to the bill.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The bill is currently headed to California’s Assembly for voting, but if passed, it would require AI companies to “perform safety testing on massively powerful AI models” to “protect citizens before it’s too late.”

  • But Pelosi and others in Congress think the bill is “well-intentioned but ill-informed” because it will stifle innovation and prevent start-ups from competing with big tech companies, in a state that leads AI innovation.

  • State Senator Scott Wiener—who sponsored the bill—“respectfully and strongly disagrees,” as “the Bill requires just the largest AI developers to perform safety testing on massively powerful AI models.”

🤔 Why you should care: Although Pelosi’s seniority and profile will give her opinion weight with California politicians, she (and others in Congress who are opposed to it) will not have any official say in the final decision.

What do you think: Will SB 1047 stifle innovation or protect humanity from harm?

EDUCATION

📚 Parents petition against AI textbooks

  • South Korea plans to bring tablets with AI-powered textbooks—covering all subjects except music, art, physical education, and ethics—that are customized for different learning speeds, into classrooms next year.

  • In response, over 50,000 parents have signed a petition asking the government to focus on students’ wellbeing, rather than tech, as they are already encountering issues “arising from exposure to digital devices.”

  • They’re concerned that AI textbooks and digital devices could “negatively affect their brain development, concentration span, and ability to solve problems, as they already use smartphones and tablets too much.”
