🥷 Microsoft poaches DeepMind co-founder for AI team

Our Report: Microsoft has hired pivotal employees from startup, Inflection AI—including its co-founder Mustafa Suleyman (also co-founder of Google’s DeepMind)—to work in its newly formed consumer AI unit, Microsoft AI.

• Suleyman will be the new CEO of Microsoft AI and will lead all consumer AI products and research for Copilot, Bing, and Edge, reporting directly to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella.

• Among other members who have made the move to Microsoft is Suleyman’s ‘friend and longtime collaborator’—Karen Simonyan—who will be Microsoft AI’s Chief Scientist.

• Inflection AI raised $1.3B last year (led by Microsoft) to build the Pi chatbot, but has since struggled with its business model, which is why Suleyman—and most Inflection AI staff—have left.

🔍 Google shake-up focuses on AI search 

• Google has changed its Search team, to ramp up advancement in AI search products, after Google CEO—Sundar Pichai—has claimed (for years) that AI will improve search quality.

• Liz Reid—who was working on AI search features—is now Head of Search, with Cheenu Venkatachary—who was also working on AI products—overseeing search quality.

• These changes could be a response to an influx of AI-powered search engines—such as Perplexity—entering the market, challenging traditional online search methods.
