Our Report: Microsoft has launched a new Copilot Pro that will give everyday users access to a multitude of generative AI features across their product range.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Copilot Pro will be a consumer plan, coming in at $20 per user per month, offering AI features across various Microsoft 365 apps—including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote—but separate to a Microsoft 365 subscription.

  • The service also includes 100 daily "boosts" in Designer for enhanced AI-powered image creation and priority access to the latest AI models, with a Copilot GPT builder already in the pipeline.

  • Furthermore, Copilot will offer enhanced features like enterprise-grade data protection and the Semantic Index for personalized responses (more on how semantic search works here).

🤨 Why you should care: Microsoft's strategic expansion of Copilot positions it as a key player in AI-powered productivity tools. Furthermore, with Microsoft recently overtaking Apple as the world’s most valuable company, we’ll likely see Microsoft hang on to this lead with everything they have.

POLITICS

  • OpenAI is updating its policies to tackle election misinformation—including prohibiting the use of OpenAI tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E for impersonating candidates or misrepresenting the voting process.

  • Additionally, OpenAI plans to take further steps, such as embedding digital credentials in Dall-E-generated images and directing US voting queries to CanIVote.org.

  • Ultimately, these measures, still in development and reliant on user reports, aim to safeguard against AI-driven misinformation—although we’re still likely to see a somewhat skewed result from the integration of AI in political campaigns.

JOBS & EMPLOYMENT
  • According to the IMF, published in a recent global study, AI is about to significantly transform the global economy, impacting around 40% of jobs worldwide.

  • The report goes on to see how advanced economies might experience greater AI-induced changes, with nearly 60% of all jobs in these economies affected.

  • While it has the potential to boost productivity and growth, AI also poses risks of job replacement and widening inequalities—especially between developed and emerging economies, as the latter may lack the infrastructure and skills to fully capitalize on AI.

MILITARY & AI
  • Despite a US ban (placed months ago), Chinese military and government institutions have been secretly acquiring NVIDIA chips through purchases from lesser-known Chinese suppliers.

  • The chips—crucial for AI and advanced computing—have been bought by entities like the Harbin Institute of Technology, known for military ties.

  • The scenario underscores the persistent demand for these high-end US chips in China and, more importantly, the difficulty in completely blocking their access—despite efforts to tighten export controls.

AI STARTUPS
  • Artifact (an AI-powered news app founded by Instagram's ex-founders) is closing down, after struggling to appeal to a large enough user base.

  • Launched in January 2023, it aimed to revolutionize news consumption with AI-curated content, but despite initial interest, Artifact struggled to compete with the appeal of established social media platforms.

  • The shutdown reflects the challenging landscape for startups in the news and information sector, and more importantly, is a signal that AI certainly can’t do everything, and a human touch is still appreciated—especially in content creation & consumption.
