AI MODELS
Our Report: Microsoft has released a miniaturized AI model–Phi-3 Mini–the first in a family of lightweight models designed to bring AI capabilities to smartphones.
🔑 Key Points:
Phi-3 Mini was trained on quality educational and synthetic data, and bedtime stories (drawing inspiration from how children learn), with researchers favoring quality over quantity.
As a result—although smaller—Phi-3 Mini surpassed Llama 3 and scored just below GPT 3.5 in natural language understanding and reasoning, and beat both on arithmetic reasoning.
Phi-3 Mini was developed under Microsoft’s ‘Responsible AI Standards’ and is available on Microsoft’s Azure AI Studio, ML model platform Hugging Face, and the Ollama framework.
🤨 Why you should care: Traditional large language models (LLMs)--like GPT-4 and Llama 3–require large amounts of computing power to run, which is expensive and leaves a huge carbon footprint, so Microsoft has built this lightweight language model that provides similar LLM capabilities but needs less computing power, making it cheaper and more sustainable.

REGULATIONS
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating the impact Microsoft and Amazon's hiring practices and partnerships with AI startups could have on UK competition.
It comes after Microsoft hired the core Inflection AI team (as part of a $650M contract) and invested $16M in Mistral AI, and Amazon recently completed a $4B stake in Anthropic.
Amazon has named the CMA’s move “unprecedented” as Anthropic doesn’t have a seat on its board and can run models across different cloud providers, not just AWS.

REVENUE PROJECTION
🙅♂️ Meta AI unprofitable for 2 years
Zuckerberg announced that his main focus for 2024 and 2025 will be to spend more and get “billions of people to use Meta AI”, rather than generating revenue from it.
He reminded stakeholders that often, Meta products—like Instagram reels—have to scale before they become profitable, making the same prediction for Meta AI.
Higher spending on AI, with a weak revenue forecast has rattled investors as Meta's shares plummeted by more than 15% during its earnings review on Wednesday.
ACQUISITION
🫰 NVIDIA acquire Israeli start-up for $700M
NVIDIA is acquiring Run:ai—an Israeli-based start-up that makes it easier for developers and operations to manage and optimize their AI hardware infrastructure—for a rumored $700M.
Run:ai has collaborated with NVIDIA since 2020, and this acquisition will give customers even more advanced infrastructure and software to manage and train their AI models.
Run:ai is one of NVIDIA’s biggest acquisitions since it bought Mellanox Technologies—an Israeli-American supplier of computer networking products—for $6.9B in 2019.
