Our Report: Meta has announced the latest version of its next-gen, custom AI chip—previously called Artemis, currently called Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA)—which took less than nine months to develop and is 3x faster than its predecessor.

🔑 Key Points:

  • MTIA v2 will power Meta’s ranking and recommendation ad models on Facebook and Instagram, and will help train the models more effectively and efficiently.

  • MTIA was built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC’s) tech and is reportedly performing 3x better than the first-gen chip, MTIA v1.

  • Meta—who is expected to spend $18B on AI chips by the end of 2024— states that MTIA v2 "more than doubles the compute and memory bandwidth of our previous chip."

🤨 Why you should care: Although Meta built this chip to “reduce its reliance” on AI chip market leader, NVIDIA, it’s confirmed that although "there's a need for these chips," they may not be able to "keep up with the advancements expected from the likes of NVIDIA.'

  • The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is testing an AI-powered scoring system to grade the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams.

  • As a result of this test, the education agency plans to hire around 2,000 graders (vs the 6,000 graders they hired last year), which will save them $15–20M p/y.

  • The AI system was trained on 3,000 exam responses, but to ensure accuracy, answers that confuse it (eg. if they include slang), and 1/4 of AI-graded results will be re-scored by humans.
