SAFETY
Our Report: The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) and the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) have asked Meta to delay training its AI models on public user data from Facebook and Instagram, and Meta has agreed.
🔑 Key Points:
This comes after Meta told EU users that it would begin collecting their data for AI training to reflect “the diverse languages, geography and cultural references of the people in Europe.”
Advocacy group—NOYB—filed 11 complaints in response to this claiming it was “clearly the opposite of GDPR compliance”, triggering the EU and UK regulatory investigation.
In response to Meta’s decision to pause its AI plans, EU and UK regulators revealed they were “pleased” that Meta had agreed to “pause plans to use Facebook and Instagram user data to train AI.”
🤔 Why you should care: Although Meta has agreed to pause its AI training in the UK and EU, and will “continue to work collaboratively with the DPC”, they’re “disappointed” by this request and feel that “without including local information” they’d only be able to offer users a “second-rate experience”, which is a “step backward for European innovation.”
Together with Incogni
You’ve likely received a sketchy call, text, or email asking for $$$. It might've been easy to spot, but with deepfakes and AI, scams are getting trickier.
Scammers use your personal data, often bought legally from data brokers who sell your phone number, DOB, SSN, and more.
Incogni scrubs your data from the web, taking on 175+ data brokers for you.
Unlike others, Incogni takes away your info from all broker types, including people search sites where anyone can buy your details for a few bucks.

GLOBAL AFFAIRS
Our Report: OpenAI is planning to expand its global affairs team from 35 members to 50, by the end of 2024, as the AI industry faces increasing regulatory scrutiny.
🔑 Key Points:
The global affairs department has members spread out across the world, in countries where AI legislation is more advanced, which includes the UK, Ireland, France, India, Brazil, and the US.
The team will work with policymakers to address regulatory challenges and shape future laws “that let us bring beneficial technology to people” but also make sure “the technology is safe."
This comes as they—and others—(see above story) face regulatory scrutiny from the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission, and regulators in the EU and UK.
🤔 Why you should care: Despite plans to expand its global affairs team, OpenAI currently spends less than big tech companies, like Meta and Google, on lobbying efforts, spending only $340,000 on engaging with the US government in Q1, compared to $3.1M by Google and $7.6M by Meta.

🔍 New Google feature raises concerns
Our Report: Google’s new AI-powered “History Search” feature will use “human reviewers” to improve the feature,” which has raised security concerns.
🔑 Key Points:
Google’s new “History Search” feature allows users to search for information within webpages they’ve previously visited, without them having to remember the page title or URL.
To address user data privacy and safety concerns, Google is assuring users that webpage data will be encrypted, stored locally, and only accessible when History Search is enabled.
This means that “human reviewers” will not be able to access the websites users have visited, but they will still be able to view their search queries unless the user chooses to “opt-out.”
🤔 Why you should care: Users are demanding that Google makes this feature “opt-in” by default (rather than “opt-out” as it currently is) so users have full control over whether their data is used for training, or not.

🚀 Siri updates are coming
Our Report: After announcing that AI-driven updates to Siri are coming in 2025 (during their worldwide developer conference (WWDC) last week) reports say that some of these features will be available before the end of this year, with the iOS 18 rollout.
🔑 Key Points:
One update that’s expected to launch before the end of 2024 is the glowing ring feature, which lights up the edges of a user’s device when Siri is activated, which Apple demoed at the WWDC.
The natural language upgrade is also rumored to be rolling out this year, enabling Siri to understand natural language better, even when users stumble over words or misspeak.
In addition, Siri will have “greater knowledge of Apple products” and users will be able to type out their queries—as well as speak them—without having to go into their accessibility settings.
🤔 Why you should care: Apple has also said that the ChatGPT functionality–which will allow Siri to connect with ChatGPT to answer broader user queries–will be available in iOS 18 later this year, but it might not make iOS 18 v1.
