Our Report: Google reportedly faces $1.67B in damages after infringing on patents owned by Singular Computing, adding more legislative concerns for AI companies across the board.

šŸ”‘Ā Key Points:

  • The patents allegedly cover the processors used in Google products to power AI technology/models, where supposedly they copied Batesā€™s (owner of Singular Computing) technology, after meeting with him to discuss solving problems central to developing AI.

  • Specifically, Bates argues that Google copied his design for TPUs whilst Google argues that its chips were designed independently and are fundamentally different from what is described in Singular's patents.

  • The TPUs in question were used to ā€œsupport AI features in Google Search, Gmail, and Google Translateā€. Furthermore, internal emails show Googleā€™s now Chief Scientist writing ā€œBatesā€™s ideas could be really well suitedā€ for what Google was developing.

REGULATIONS & AI

  • The EU Commission is scrutinizing Microsoft's investment in OpenAI to determine if it falls under the EU Merger Regulation.

  • The regulation aims to prevent mergers that significantly reduce market competition, and Microsoft's exclusive access to OpenAI's technology might unfairly give it an advantage over competitors.

  • The Commission's findings could lead to approval, blocking, or conditional adjustments to this investment ($13B since 2019), significantly impacting the partnership (at least in the EU).

SOCIAL MEDIA & AI

  • Musk's vision for X involves transforming it into the ā€˜Everything Appā€™ which includes payments and AI-enhanced features (similar to WeChat in China).
