CLIMATE
Our Report: In its annual Environmental Reportāwhich highlights its efforts to mitigate contributions to climate changeāGoogle has admitted that its greenhouse gas emissions have soared, thanks to its prioritization of AI.
š Key Points:
In 2021, Google committed to reaching ānet zeroā by 2030, intending to cut its emissions by half (compared to 2019), and run on carbon, pollution-free energy.
But, its emissions grew by 13% last year (which are 48% higher than they were in 2019), producing 14.3M metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution, equivalent to the amount 38 gas-fired power plants release.
The biggest contributor to the increase was its data centersāwhich require huge amounts of electricity to train and power its AI modelsāhaving released 1M metric tons of pollution last year.
š¤ Why you should care: According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global AI data centers use 1% of the worldās electricity, but with the rise in AI, this is expected to double by 2026, pushing us further away from reversing the climate change, with other big tech companies reporting similar results to Google (Microsoft's greenhouse gas emissions were around 30% higher last year).

GAMING
š® Metaās gaming revolution
Our Report: According to a recent job post listing, Meta is planning to bring more generative AI into its metaverse virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed-reality games.
š Key Points:
Theyāre looking for someone to prototype ānew types of gameplayā in the metaverse, that will āchange every time you play themā and follow ānon-deterministicā paths, creating unimaginable experiences.
While the primary focus seems to be on HorizonāMetaās family of metaverse games, apps, and resourcesāit might expand into games on ānon-Metaā platforms, like smartphones and PCs.
They also plan to build AI-powered tools to increase efficiency and āallow considerably more gaming content to be createdā to improve workflows and release more gaming products.
š¤ Why you should care: This is Metaās attempt to reinvigorate their flagging Metaverse division which, despite selling huge amounts of Meta Quest headsets and receiving $50M for research and development, made a $3.8B loss in the first quarter of this year.

INTERNAL POLITICS
š¤ Apple joins OpenAI board
Our Report: As part of their landmark partnershipāannounced last month at Appleās WorldWide Developer Conferenceāwhich will integrate OpenAIās ChatGPT into Apple devices, Apple has been granted an āobserver roleā on OpenAIās nonprofit board.
š Key Points:
Apple has elected App Store Chief and former advertising headāPhil Schillerāto represent the company at board meetings, although he will have no director or voting rights.
Although Schiller isnāt involved in Apple's AI initiatives, he was given the prestigious āApple Fellowā title in 2020 for his āoutstandingā contribution to the company, making him the perfect representative.
The new arrangement is expected to start later this year and will allow Apple to learn more about the inner workings of OpenAI, as they plan to build ChatGPT into iOS and macOS.
š¤ Why you should care: This new arrangement comes after Microsoft was also invited to join OpenAIās board last year, in a non-voting, observer position, which could cause tension and complications for the two rivals when AI initiatives are discussed, although Micrsfot can demand that Schiller is excluded from particularly sensitive meetings.
STANDARDS
š§ Anthropic funding new industry benchmark?
Our Report: Anthropic is launching a program to fund the development of a new type of benchmark system, that will help evaluate the performance and impact of AI models, like OpenAIās ChatGPT, Googleās Gemini, and its very own Claude.
š Key Points:
The program will offer grants to third-party organizations that are trying to improve how the performance of an AI model is evaluated, particularly in areas like cyberattacks and manipulation.
In addition to grant funding, the new program will allow researchers to consult with domain experts and offer different āfunding optionsā, tailored to the needs of the most āpromising projects.ā
Anthropic is advocating for the development of new benchmarking tools, infrastructure, and methods to develop more robust benchmarks to address growing societal and security implications.
š¤ Why you should care: While the initiative to create a more rigorous industry standard is commendable, some have raised concerns over Anthropic's motivation for this: Could it be for their own, commercial gain?
