POLITICS

🎭 The Rise of Political Deepfakes

deepfake

Our Report: Google's DeepMind division has unveiled its first analysis of AI technology misuse, revealing that AI-generated "deepfakes" of politicians and celebrities are far more prevalent than other forms of AI misuse, including cyber-attacks.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Fake images, videos, and audio of people are nearly twice as common as the next highest form of AI tool abuse.

  • Over a quarter (27%) of AI misuse cases aim to sway public opinion, raising alarm about deepfakes' potential impact on global elections.

  • Major social platforms like TikTok, X, and Instagram have seen deepfakes of political figures, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

🤔 Why you should care: As AI tools become more accessible and sophisticated, the potential for widespread manipulation of public opinion grows. This trend could significantly impact elections, erode social trust, and blur the lines between fact and fiction.

EDUCATION

🔥 Harvard dropouts challenge Nvidia

Our Report: Etched, a startup founded by Harvard dropouts, has raised $120M to develop Sohu, an AI chip specifically designed to run transformer models, potentially challenging NVIDIA’s dominance in the AI chip market.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Etched's Sohu chip is an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) tailored for running transformer models, the architecture behind AI models like ChatGPT.

  • CEO Gavin Uberti says Sohu is "an order of magnitude faster and cheaper than even Nvidia's next generation of Blackwell GB200 GPUs" for running text, image, and video transformers.

  • The startup has raised $120M in a Series A funding round, led by Primary Venture Partners and Positive Sum Ventures, with notable angel investors including Peter Thiel and Kyle Vogt.

🤔 Why you should care: Etched's approach of creating a highly specialized chip for transformer models could potentially disrupt the AI chip market, currently dominated by Nvidia. If successful, this could lead to more efficient AI processing, accelerating AI development and deployment.

AUTOMOTIVE

🚗 Robotaxies for Everyone

Our Report: Waymo has opened up its autonomous ride-hailing service to all residents of San Francisco, allowing anyone to summon a driverless ride through its app without needing to join a waitlist.

🔑 Key Points:

  • Waymo's service is accessible to anyone who downloads the app and requests a ride, eliminating the previous waitlist system that could take weeks or months.

  • The company has been operating in San Francisco since August 2021, gradually expanding from "trusted testers" to regular waitlisted customers. Approximately 300,000 people had signed up for the waitlist since its launch.

  • This move comes nearly four years after Waymo made a similar expansion in Phoenix, Arizona in 2020, where the service has been operating without a waitlist.

🤔 Why you should care: Waymo's expansion is a big step towards making self-driving cars a regular part of city living. As it challenges traditional ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft, Waymo's performance could transform how you travel around your city, your perception of road safety, and even job markets in the transportation sector.
