ROBOTICS

🦾 Figure 02: Smartest robot ever?

Figure 02: Smartest robot ever?

Our Report: Robotics company, Figure AI, has revealed its latest humanoid robot—Figure 02—(the successor to Figure 01, which was released last year) which “has significant technical advancements”, that enable the robot to complete complex tasks autonomously, self-correct its mistakes, and have 2-way conversations with workers, possibly making it the “most advanced humanoid robot on the market.”

🔑 Key Points:

  • Figure 02 combines built-in microphones/speakers with AI models (possibly GPT-o4?), improving its communication capabilities, and has a more powerful camera system, allowing quicker and more intuitive visual reasoning.

  • It has human-scale hands with human-like strength and coordination that allow it to pick up objects weighing up to 55 pounds (equivalent to a 65-inch TV) and put them down, in the right place, to the millimeter.

  • With an upgraded battery, it has 50% more runtime than Figure 01 and is being tested at BMW’s Spartanburg plant, where early results show it can put things like sheet metal pieces where they need to be.

🤔 Why you should care: While there’s no timeline for a wider Figure 02 rollout, Figure AI has stated that it will be ideal for “physically demanding and unsafe tasks” in factory settings (although they are hinting that the dexterity of the new robot could make it ideal for the home, someday soon) increasing fears that robots will soon replace human workers, making certain low-skill, manual jobs redundant, which we're already seeing with Amazon: It decreased its workforce by 100,000 after bringing in 750,000 robots.

P.S. Keep going and watch Figure 02 in the BMW factory, at the end of this newsletter…

AI SEARCH

🚀 Reddit unveils AI search

Reddit unveils AI search

Our Report: During its second earnings call since going public in March, Reddit announced it was planning to launch a new, AI-powered search feature that would “summarize and recommend content” for Reddit users.

🔑 Key Points:

  • The AI search feature will help users "dive deeper into products, shows, games and discover new communities on Reddit" and although no launch date was announced, testing will begin later this year.

  • Reddit sees the AI-powered search feature as a way to retain existing users, attract new ones, and generate more ad revenue thanks to more targeted and relevant ad placements within the search results.

  • This follows the success of the AI translation tool, and these investments in AI could be why Reddit users have increased by 57% since 2023, and Reddit made $281.2M in Q2, beating Wall Street estimates of $253.8M.

🤔 Why you should care: Reddits focus on AI features isn’t surprising given it recently secured partnerships with OpenAI and Google, enabling it to use its language models (likely to power the new search feature) in exchange for data.
