📈 Altman’s AI push starts in US

Our Report: Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO (Sam Altman) asked the US government to support his plans to build a coalition of global investors to fund his costly infrastructure project—to build the machinery and systems needed to power rapidly advancing AI models, around the world—now, further details reveal that he plans to target the US, first.

🔑 Key Points:

• The infrastructure projects Altman plans to execute include building more data centers, increasing energy capacity and transmission with turbines and generators, and expanding AI chip manufacturing facilities.

• Altman recently met with investors from Canada, Korea, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates to push the project forward, and OpenAI’s biggest backer—Microsoft—is also expected to participate.

• It also comes after reports last week revealed that OpenAI is in talks with investors to raise the largest amount of capital in over a year, with potential backers including Apple and NVIDIA, along with Microsoft.

🤔 Why you should care: It’s no surprise that Altman is targeting the US first, as he’s previously vocalized the desperate need for new US AI infrastructure to maintain the country’s technological lead, however, his ambitious global plans could raise US national security concerns over Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds and their ties to China, although Altman has argued that his global infrastructure plan would give America a geopolitical advantage, as his international coalition could compete with China’s infrastructure, and that the US would get the capital that might otherwise go to China

🔥 Canva's 300% price increase!

Our Report: Design platform, Canva, has dramatically increased its subscription prices—in some cases by 300%---and is blaming the integration of AI into its features for the colossal increase.

🔑 Key Points:

• In the US, for example, some original Canva subscribers—who were on older plans—have reported that their subscriptions have suddenly increased from $120 p/yr (for five users) to $500 p/yr.

• In its defense, Canva says its original pricing reflected the early stage of the product and has remained unchanged for four years, so is therefore justifiably “updating the price to reflect our expanded product experience.”

• This refers to the growing suite of AI features Canva has introduced to the platform—which include Magic Studio—transforming it from a design tool, specifically for designers, to one that can be used by anyone.

🤔 Why you should care: Unsurprisingly, subscribers haven’t responded well—especially as the changes were secretively communicated to them via email, not transparently announced publicly as they have previously been—with many believing the increases are because the start-up has grown too quickly, after acquiring two companies this year, as it readies for an IPO.

📚 Google releases AI tools for students 

• Ahead of the new college season, Google has launched five new Gemini-powered educational AI tools, aimed at college students (they must be 18+ to use them) to help them study quicker and more efficiently.

• Among the tools are customized practice exam quizzes—which provide performance feedback—and personalized study plans so students can organize their schedules to maximize study time.

• Gemini is also powering easy-to-understand explainers, videos, and informative content, and students can ask it for learning material recommendations and it will select relevant materials to match their needs.

AUTOMOTIVE

🆕 ChatGPT inside your VW car? 

• After announcing a partnership with ChatGPT in January, Volkswagen (VW) is now rolling out an improved in-car AI voice assistant (IDA)—powered by ChatGPT and other models—from September 6th, to US drivers.

• IDA can understand natural language requests, so while driving, drivers will be able to ask it for things like restaurant recommendations or stories, or if they tell it they’re too cold, it will put the heating on.

• VW confirmed that most 2025 vehicles will get IDA (with the 2025 Jetta/Jetta GLI being among the first), but drivers of these cars will need to subscribe to VW’s Plus Speech with AI service to get access.
