🧠 News: Big tech braces for impact as new EU laws are enforced

Read Time: 4 minutes

Our Report: The European Union's newly enforced Digital Services Act (DSA) mandates stringent rules on the world's top tech giants, focusing on content moderation, user privacy, and transparency measures.

🔑 Key Points:

  1. Starting Friday, major online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Apple's App Store, and Google services will have to meet new EU obligations, including prevention of harmful content distribution, and sharing specific data with regulators.

  2. Concerns rise over tech giants' preparation to meet the EU's DSA standards. Initially, the DSA targets 19 platforms with over 45 million EU users, but by mid-February, it will apply universally to all online platforms.

  3. Companies violating DSA regulations may face up to 6% of their global turnover as fines, repeated violators risk a complete ban from operating in Europe.

  4. The DSA directly targets the spread of AI in content personalization; aiming to mitigate the manipulative effects of AI in customer-facing tech.

🤔 Why you should care: The enforcement of the DSA in Europe will set significant precedents for online platforms globally. Will the US follow in their footsteps?

"Engage in a comprehensive Pre-Mortem Analysis to evaluate the proposed business decision. Visualize a scenario where, in the future, this decision has led to significant challenges or even failure. By tracing back from that hypothetical failure, identify the potential causes that may have contributed to the undesired outcome. Armed with this foresight, formulate proactive mitigation strategies to prevent these potential issues from arising, thus increasing the likelihood of success for the decision in question."

Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, expects the AI boom to continue and has significantly backed his optimism with large investments, including a $25B buyback of company shares.

The company plans to increase hardware production to meet the demand driven by the transition from traditional data centers to Nvidia chip-based systems; and whilst the bet is bold, NVIDIA currently have a near monopolistic hold on the market, so it could pay off tenfold.

Britain will host a global AI summit in November at Bletchley Park, the historical site where the Enigma code was deciphered during World War II.

The event will gather tech executives, officials, and academics to address AI risks, including its use in elections and warfare. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak envisions this event as a catalyst for innovation in AI, with plans to establish the UK as a leader in AI regulation.

Meta is launching "Code Llama," an AI model designed to assist with writing computer code, offering code completion and debugging features.

Available for free, this AI is built on Meta's Llama 2 language model and will compete with Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, supporting languages like Python, Java, and C++. A beauty for any coding beginners out there!
