📢 Apple releases AI features!

Our Report: Following the announcement of its AI platform—Apple Intelligence—and upcoming AI features at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, Apple has launched some of these AI features with the release of its newest OS: iOS 18.1, in a developer beta.

🔑 Key Points:

• The AI features launched include an updated Siri with a new design, capability to switch between text/voice, enhanced device knowledge/context, and improved ability to follow prompts, even if unclear.

• iOS 18.1 testers also get AI tools that rewrite, proofread, and summarize text, smart replies, email summaries, a focus mode (which displays top-priority notifications), and natural-language search in Photos.

• To try these features, developers will need to have an Apple Intelligence-supported device (eg. iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max), be registered with Apple’s developer beta program, and they will need to join a waitlist.

🤔 Why you should care: Although these features aren’t available for the average user to try (and a public-use beta hasn’t been scheduled, either) Apple is seeking feedback from developers, specifically, so they can fix bugs, refine iOS 18, and thoroughly test the new AI features, so there is no potential to impact or delay the launch of the new, iPhone 16 series, which is rumored to arrive in September.

REGULATIONS

💡 US government wants more “open” AI

Our Report: The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), an agency within the US Commerce Department, has released a report, supporting the use of “open weight” AI models—which allow developers to build on and fine-tune AI models for specific tasks, but slightly limit the control and insight into its inner workings—but have called for “new capabilities” to monitor and evaluate the associated risks.

🔑 Key Points:

• The report advises the government not to restrict access to open-weight models because they enable small companies, researchers, and developers to build new technology, positively impacting US innovation.

• This aligns with recent comments from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) who believe that open models—like Meta’s Llama 3.1—allow smaller players to bring their ideas to market, promoting healthy competition.

• But, due to their ‘open’ nature, these models can often be a higher risk, so NTIA has asked the government to research the safety of different AI models and impose restrictions on model availability, if necessary.

🤔 Why you should care: California is about to pass a law that would require tech companies wishing to release open-weight models to be able to “shut down” copies of models when needed, and the EU has recently introduced new rules around copyright, transparency, and AI applications (which Meta says will prevent it from releasing open models), this report comes at a crucial time, as regulators from across the globe consider new rules and regulations for companies wishing to release open-weight models.

SUSTAINABILITY

🏙️ Cities slash emissions with Google

• Google has a sustainability tool (called Green Light) that uses AI and Google Maps data to recommend ways to prevent cars from stopping/starting at traffic lights; a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

• The tool analyzes data like traffic flow and stop/start frequency and identifies improvements like shortening the duration of red lights at off-peak times, which city engineers can easily implement, using existing infrastructure.

• Green Light is being tested in 12 cities, including Seattle, Boston, and Rio de Janeiro and, according to data, has already reduced cars stopping/starting at traffic lights by 30%, which has lowered emissions by 10%.

ACQUISITIONS

🎨 Canva expands its AI capabilities 

• Canva has acquired Leonardo.ai, an AI content design and research startup with over 19M users, that provides collaboration tools and lets customers build their own tech infrastructure on top of its platform

• All of Leonardo.ai’s 120 employees will join Canva, and although the monetary details of the deal weren’t revealed, Canva co-founder—Cameron Adams—confirmed it was “a mix of $$$ and stock.”

• He said Canva might “integrate Leonardo’s technology into Magic Studio” (its AI content design tools) to make it “more powerful,” or introduce new “AI capabilities powered by Leonardo’s models directly into Canva.”
