ADVANCEMENTS
Our Report: Chinese conglomerate, Alibaba, has released a new AI model (QwQ-32B-Preview, or QwQ for short) which is capable of advanced reasoning—meaning it can ‘reason’ through tasks and answer complex questions across subjects like Math, logic, and coding—and is one of the few (DeepSeek-R1 being another frontrunner) to rival OpenAI’s o1-preview (released in September), but with a key difference: It’s open-source, and can be downloaded and used commercially from AI dev platform, Hugging Face.
🔑 Key Points:
QWQ can handle 32,000-word prompts (o1-preview handles 96,000), but it outperforms o1-preview on Aime (which uses AI to assess performance) and Math (tests reasoning and math abilities) benchmarks.
On Math tests, QWQ scored 90.6%, whereas OpenAI’s o1-preview scored 85.5%, but on Aime tests, QWQ got 50%, which was significantly higher than o1, which got just 44.6% (For context, GPT-4o scored 9.3%).
But despite the impressive performance, QWQ is still an experimental model, and Alibaba has warned that it can sometimes switch languages, get stuck in loops, and underperform on some “common sense reasoning” tasks.
🤔 Why you should care: Although comparable to o1 in performance, QWQ is similar to DeepSeek-R1 (released last week, and also rivals o1 in its reasoning ability), as it avoids answering questions about certain political topics. This is undoubtedly because they are both Chinese companies and will, therefore, face pressure from the Chinese government to build AI models that “embody core socialist values.”

TRADEMARKING
Our Report: OpenAI has filed a trademark application to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its latest model, o1, marking a crucial step for OpenAI, as it moves to protect its intellectual property (IP).
🔑 Key Points:
The documents submitted to the USPTO reveal that OpenAI had filed a foreign trademark application for o1 in May, showing they had strategically planned the release of o1, months in advance.
OpenAI is undoubtedly keen to trademark o1 as it’s a breakthrough model that can tackle complex tasks with self-reasoning capabilities and is the first in a series of reasoning models that OpenAI plans to release.
The USPTO hasn’t granted the o1 trademark yet, but OpenAI has previously submitted 30 trademark applications—including ones for ChatGPT and Sora—although they didn’t get one for GPT, as ‘GPT’ is too generic.
🤔 Why you should care: Although OpenAI has applied for multiple trademarks to protect its IP and prevent unauthorized use of terms in other products or services—demonstrating its continued commitment to innovation and protection for its pioneering AI models—it’s asserted its trademark rights just once, when technology expert Guy Ravine argued that he had proposed the name “OpenAI” back in 2015 (OpenAI’s founding year), a case which he lost.

ENERGY
The US Department of Energy has announced $30M in grant funding to set up an AI-powered interconnection process to get new energy generation projects to the power grid, quicker, to meet growing demand.
AI will reduce the time required to review and commission interconnections across the country, as the current process is manual, resulting in backlogs and delaying new sources of energy from coming online.
Although AI is contributing to the pressure to generate more electricity to meet demand, it’s taking 7 years to connect new electricity projects to the grid, which has been increasing with the backlog.

CHATBOTS
Elon Musk's AI startup—xAI—is reportedly about to release a standalone consumer-facing app for its chatbot, Grok, a move which would put them in direct competition with its nemesis, OpenAI.
Currently, subscribers can access the chatbot via Musk’s social platform X (formerly Twitter), but if these—Wall Street Journal—rumors are true, Grok will be accessible from any device, from December.
It’s expected to launch after xAI closes its next funding round, which is set to reach $5B, valuing the start-up at $50M (double its valuation from 6 months ago) and bringing the total amount raised to $11B.
